What a fun weekend!
We drove down to Rapid City on Saturday. The day started nice and relaxed, just getting a few items together and preparing for the trip. Then, we drove down to the Dahl Arts Center and did some crafts with my daughter. She painted a picture that she gave to her great grandparents, we made a snowflake mobile, and a necklace as well. After that, we stopped by a great coffee shop and had - you guessed it! Coffee.
We swung by the UPS store so that I could mail out about 30 parcels. Some of you reading this will probably receive those. My daughter helped but the return labels on them and also the stickers on some of the items we put inside. She was excited to earn the right to pick up something up over the weekend ... only, we never really went shopping! So we'll get her something next time we're out.
We brought some buffalo stakes on ice in our cooler and cooked them for dinner at my grandparents' house. We had buffalo, peas, carrots, salad, and bread. It was delicious. I then indulged in grandma's Special-K bars (yum). My aunt, uncle, cousin and her husband all stopped by and we all played a few rounds of "Hand and Foot." Fun game. My daughter watched movies with my cousin's son. She was starting to have a fairly bad cold (runny nose, etc) but we told her to choose not to get sick and fall asleep thinking of waking up healthy. Today, the signs of the cold are almost completely gone!
We went to church with my grandparents and then breakfast afterwards. We spend some time at the house and then went to the store. My wife and I had been discussing some things, and both agreed we missed really having more fresh vegetables and fruits. I had gone on a few juice fasts, for spiritual reasons as opposed to physical reasons, and she would always enjoy juicing a few items to supplement our otherwise healthy meals. I decided that I was fairly out of balance with my nutrition and that a juice fast would be a great way to get back in balance and have a spiritual journey to kick off the new year as well. So, tonight, I officially began my 7-day juice fast, followed by a 7-day raw food fast and then I plan on doing mainly raw but with a cooked dinner (hey, I'm not wasting that half buffalo in our freezer!).
We stocked up on oranges, apples, grapes, pears, pommelos (look that one up - they're great), pineapple, carrots, celery, baby spinach, peppers, and other items that lend themselves to juicing. The Director's Cut of King Arthur caught my eye on the way out - haven't even seen the main movie but love history and fantasy so we picked up the DVD and will watch it tonight.
Took the dogs on a walk and then soaked in the hottub and made my first drink - pommelo and apple. It was great. Still undecided about what I'll have next.
Last time I did a juice fast, I was working, so it was a little bit of juggling to get the juices prepared, etc. This time, living out of the house, not a problem at all. I know the next few days will be the most challenging, and decided that since my Monday night interviewee had some obligations and would have to delay, I'd go ahead and share my take on raw foods and juice fasting for the Become Your Best coaching call this week.
That's about it for the update. Going to have some more juice, watch a movie, and hit the sack. Honestly, the toughest aspect for me is not the food - it's the coffee. Coffee withdrawals for a few days but then more clarity, balance, and control. I know I will follow through, but I also know some days will be intense until I adjust to the new style of nutrition, so I figured it best to hold myself accountable by posting here. I'm 210 as of today, and while much of the rapid weight loss will be water weight (and not so much lean mass as most fear) I will still be exercising consistently (doing my Hindu squats, etc) and once I jump into the raw phase will be getting plenty of protein through nuts, seeds, etc. So just 14-days with restricted protein intake and then I'll be having a large buffalo portion for my dinners after that. I feel so much more energetic and in-balance when there are more raw, fresh foods in my nutrition, so this is part of the transition to get back to that ... it's tough to enjoy the raw foods when inundated with processed carb cravings, etc.
Blessed be,
