I did mostly a water fast today. The reasoning? I wanted to do one, and tomorrow wouldn't make sense because I'm coming off of it on Sunday.
So, I chose to do it today, then transition back to juice tomorrow and raw foods on Sunday.
I've been thumbing through the articles and recipes in God's Banquet Table. This is a huge resource that covers fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc, breaking down various types, what their properties are, how they can benefit health, etc. Then, it is loaded with healthy recipes. For example, ever thought of blending dates with water, sprinkling Sucanat (a form of organic raw sugar) on top and then cooling for an all-natural pudding? Okay, so maybe it only sounds appealing to someone in the middle of a juice fast but I plan on incorporating a lot of those recipes as I transition to the raw foods phase.
I had a lot of fun today creating some custom workouts. I realized why I like designing workout programs so much. It's like writing and computer programming - people try to make it analytical, but it's an art. You have lots of components and pieces, but then must intuitively piece them together. You take into account someone's age to determine higher/lower reps or volume of sets, whether they have injuries, what they do for a living, what their goals are, and all of these other variables and paint a picture that is for them - sure, the exercises are nothing new, but the way you blend them together, pairing this one with that one, choosing sets, etc, is just exciting. Want to do some wrist work on a compressed schedule? Reverse the grip. Not much time for rest? Do agonist/antagonist pairs and reduce the rest time. Do they travel a lot? Use bodyweight.
The water fast has drained a bit of my energy but in exchange, I have gained a bit of clarity. It's exciting to determine that I want to permanently change my nutrition moving forward - I allowed myself to slip into a rut of carbohydrate cravings. Definitely no more fried foods, those are out (that means chips unless they are baked). The book I mentioned above has an awesome recipe to make "chips" by slicing potatoes thin and baking them instead. A lot more raw foods. And finally, free of the coffee addiction. I had given up on giving up coffee, I'd get these headaches and urges and whenever I felt lost, I'd turn to a cup of coffee. I'm not saying coffee is EVIL but I don't like being addicted to anything. While fasting, those moments don't allow me to turn to anyone or anything but myself and God ... so I realized the strength to enjoy the days WITHOUT a crutch like a cup of coffee to replace the space I used to fill with a cigarette ... or alcohol .. or otherwise.
It feels good. I'm also excited to see the changes in my body. This may be the first time I reach single digits body fat without counting calories or measuring foods, but simply by staying in tune with my body and selecting healthier foods.
We'll see ... stay tuned!
Blessed be,
