Recently I was in a clothes shop, and I mentioned to the salesperson that I had trimmed down a little bit. She then asked if I had been going to the gym.
The answer is yes and no.
Gym memberships are expensive and guarantee us nothing. We have to make the effort to get there and work out. Wouldn't it be great if you could buy a block of motivation to go with that?
The good thing about a gym is once you are there... motivation is easy. Everybody is working out. You are there to exercise, and (unless you spend the whole time talking to someone) you will come away feeling like you've achieved something.
Working out on home equipment lacks the camaraderie but is very convenient.
I have tried both - home gym and paid membership... and it very much depends on your personal circumstances. I will say this: While a paid gym has vastly superior equipment - this is no substitute for personal intensity or commitment.
At home I can get away with panting like a tired dog, emitting the occasional grunt, and doing exercises like Burpees or Tuck Jumps without getting really strange looks.
Whatever gets the job done...

I love the equipment at the gym, it's the trainers and other people that drive me crazy. I try to ignore everyone around me and do my own thing. I rarely see men doing full squats or deadlifts, never mind the women. I'd personally love to see a burpee at the gym! The good thing is that it's not hard to get a turn at the power rack because barely anyone knows what to do with it.
Another nice thing about the gym is that when I want to try a new exercise, they usually have the equipment to do it. It's easy to change my workout up at the gym if I'm feeling bored. And to be honest, I love the looks of shock I get from the free weight guys when I do front squats, overhead squats or deadlifts.

The gym I (used to ) go to has a resident powerlifting team -- so the squat rack was always busy... but never ever as busy the the bench presses....
But no... never seen a burpee.... I', sure if I started doing that all the people sitting on the bikes would have a jolly good laugh....

sweet tart: I don't do squats or deadlifts because I am a bodybuilder, not a weightlifter. Squats can create wide hips and turnip thighs. I suspect deadlifts might have some of the same consequences. Gironda, the greatest trainer that bodybuilding has ever seen, taught training in isolation. Again, we're not weightlifters.

I have been to a number of gyms from time to time, mainly to find out how much I can leg press, bench press, etc. My workouts have been mainly biking, as my username indicates. On one occesion, I leg pressed 800 pounds, and was called "muscle man". He himself was very muscular, so I could not understand why he would call me that.

Personally I prefer to workout at home, mainly because I save the extra half hour traveling to the gym, changing, and traveling home. I have a library of workout videos from Tony Horton, Debbie Seibert, and Chelene Johnson, as well as a variety of weights (ankle weights, weighted gloves, weighted jumprope, dumbells, etc.) So I find it really easy to switch up my workout on a regular basis and save time. I do however, only feel like I get a good cardio workout by going for a nice long jog.
