Overuse and Injury

Over the last month or so I have been plagued with dull pain in the forearms. It is a feeling very similar to "shin splints" - if you have ever been jogging.

Apparently it is cause by a problem with the tendons and really, only months of rest will let it heal. I have always been weak in that area, and some of it may be caused by too much time at the keyboard.

The problem is exacerbated by movements using the bicep - such as bicep curls, chin-ups, and pull-ups. Once the problem is there, most movements requiring a strong grip action can become painful.

Overuse problems are far more common that what we realize. Just find any former competitive gymnast. By the time they reach thirty most of their joints are not in good shape at all.

Sometimes you can do all the warming up, you can supplement with a multi-vitamin, and you can ensure you consume the right fats in your diet... and still injury can come calling.

  • You can suppliment your training with Protein shakes to repair muscle while sleeping. Take a shake 30 minutes before bed time. It will make the world of difference to you.

  • Dude, you've overworked your finger flexion... in opposition to your finger extension. That's what causes "forearm splints". Bottom line: You need to work finger extension.

Wrap a rubber band around the five fingers of your hand, and spread them apart against the resistence of the band. Take this to muscular exhaustion, and repeat for a few sets on each hand. Do this daily, and report back with any change in symptoms.

    It worked for me!

  • I also used to have some of this, I think often the tendons aren't strong enough for the workout we start doing, and since we all want to see major progress in a very short time, we overload them.

I think the only good way to go about this is to use various exercises to strengthen the tendons, especially grip exercises etc, and just go slowly and build them up without injury.

One exercise that works your forearms is taking a page from a newspaper and fold it into a ball, and really crunch it hard, using only one hand. It's harder than it seems!
