Why Aren't You Deadlifting?

Go into any large gym today and you will find an enormous array of machines. There are a couple of machines for every single muscle group.

However, unless you are a bodybuilder really trying to perfect that sculpted physique, I really question the value of spending a lot of time working away on all these isolated exercises.

In many gyms it's quite rare to see anyone deadlifting - whether for fear of getting technique wrong, or maybe doing something silly - I really don't know.

If there is any single exercise that hits the largest amount of muscle groups in one hit - then the deadlift is it. It surely is one of the most powerful metabolic boosters there is. You can do heavy low-reps, or power through 15 rep sets that leave you gasping.

Of course getting the technique right is extremely important - BUT - we all have different shaped bodies and good technique on one person can look different on another person (it's to do with length of your back relative to leg length). Make sure you get a trainer to assist you with correct technique.

So why aren't you deadlifting?

  • Recently read a book by Pavel Tsatsouline - power to the people - who says exactly that. He claims to be giving you Russian Strength Secrets. I agree that for the average guy just wanting to be fit and strong, sticking to multi-joint exercises is best. Mimicking natural movement.

The best physiques I see about are buiders who are shifting heavy weights about and doing natural movement. That's provided they haven't had too many chippy dinners :)

  • I love the deadlift. Even though I get some funny looks I love it because I get so much out of such a simple move.

  • Good point!

Add squat to the list, too.

I just found your blog, and I'm enjoying it.

  • The best way to deadlift is with light weights and higher reps. This prevents injuries and builds your lower back stamina

  • Dead lifts do work well. As do sqauts . They both produce a lot of testosterone and are great for muscle growth. I do agree that someone who is just wanting to tone up could stick to more basic exercises at the gym.

  • I certainly agree that deadlifts should be a staple for anyone in a serious pursuit of fitness. They can even be at a lighter weight, but the overall health benefits from the compound movement are numerous.

I recently started a fitness blog of my own and I am trying to recruit constructive criticism from potential readers. If anyone has a chance, please check out www.bostonbodyfit.wordpress.com and share your thoughts. Thanks and keep up the good work In Pursuit.
