I am allergic to my post-workout protein shake — what should I do?
I'm trying to figure out why you are taking a protein shake after a workout, anyway, since that is the optimal window for your body to use carbohydrates. Protein is something you require over a 24-hour period - muscle synthesis does not happen immediately after a workout, it happens over time, up to 72 hours following the workout. So it is important to get quality protein throughout the day. Immediately after a workout, it's carbohydrates that you've depleted so carbohydrates are what is important.
As for protein shake, I am not a doctor but my experience is that it is not "protein" that causes the problem, it is "specific proteins" - i.e. you might be allergic to a specific type of protein and may want to experiment. Most of your protein should come from whole foods sources and the idea of a protein shake is simply to supplement.
Finally, are you taking in healthy fats? A lot of your skin's ability to maintain the proper pH balance has to do with supplying the healthy fats that are used to both regulate the natural oils secreted by your skin as well as repair cell membranes from damaged skin cells.
