I feel I get a better workout for my arms doing curls — is working my triceps really necessary?

The "I feel it syndrome" isnt the best course of action to gain. You'll want to, instead, focus on the balance/kinesiology/human movement approach - i.e. what's been tried and tested.

The triceps are 2/3 of your arm mass.

In addition, your triceps probably get more work throughout the day than your biceps in every day work - we tend to push more than pull throughout the day. Therefore, strengthening this is functional and assists your every day activities.

Finally, the elbow is a sensitive joint. Many people get carpal tunnel, pain in their forearms, tennis elbow, and other conditions that more than likely related to balance and flexibility about the wrist and elbow joint. Prevention means balancing your training around the joint - keep in mind the triceps and biceps have ties all the way down to the wrist - and flexibility.
