Taking Your Healthy Diet to Work

One of the most common problems we all face when trying to start a healthy diet plan, is finding the time to fit it into our already hectic lifestyles.

Like a majority of the workforce, you probably spend most of the working day at your desk, with little time to get away for lunch, let alone prepare and cook a healthy meal.

If you’re anything like I used to be, you take advantage of the nearest café/ fast food restaurant and eat it whilst catching up on emails.

It’s something we can all sympathise with; being “too busy”. The truth is, it is living and working in this way, which is why so many people become unhealthy, gain weight and turn to a weight loss plan.

As much as we can relate to it, once you have read this, it will no longer be a valid excuse. Like all changes you choose to make in your life, it is only you who can make them, and you who must follow them through.

I’m not even suggesting anything drastic, so you needn’t worry about insisting in taking an hour off at lunch to jog to your nearest salad bar. All it takes to eat healthier is some preparation, and as well as losing a bit of weight you are also likely to save yourself a stack of cash as well!

Each Sunday evening, I find just 1 hour to plan and prepare all my lunches for following the week. This week, I decided my healthy meat of choice would be chicken breast, marinated in some tomato sauce, pepper and onions (delicious!). I then thought, “What vegetables would my mother want me to eat?” and from revisiting flashbacks of school evenings and wonderful weekend meals I chose: broccoli, new potatoes, and carrots (she would be proud!). In less than 1 hour, I cooked enough food for 3 servings. By spacing out these meals (1 per lunch per day) I had enough to last me to Wednesday. If it wasn’t for the fact that I like to mix things up a bit, I could have easily prepared my meals for the whole week.

Using some standard Tupperware containers, I store my “ready meals” in the fridge, taking one portion to work each day. When lunch comes round, I simply zap my wonderful food in the microwave for a couple of minutes, and upon returning to my desk I am the envy of the office. What’s more the cost of the ingredients for this “fast food” works out at about $2 a meal, saving on my waste-band, and on my wallet.

There is no excuse. Preparing these meals:

  • Is simple
  • Saves time at work
  • Is cheap
  • And most important of all, incredibly healthy.
