Exercise that Doesn’t Feel like Exercise

I’m lucky. Even though working as a home-based freelancer means that I don’t always have the best diet and am often inactive for entire days, I don’t seem prone to gaining weight. And while I have a ways to go in order to be as fit as I would like, I’m lucky to be as thin as I am, considering that some people’s waistlines would start to steadily expand if they sat as much as I do.

This article isn’t supposed to be me gloating, though. I’m here to tell you that you can be lucky too. If my aversion to weight gain was just an accident of birth, I certainly wouldn’t consider that something worth sharing, particularly not with people who are searching online for ways of achieving better bodies. The fact is that my good fortune has always seemed unfair to me. I’ve known people who appeared to eat fewer calories than I did, were similarly active, and yet struggled to keep their weight down. I always wondered why we had such different outcomes.

 What The Research Says

One other person who asked this question, and who was in a position to find out the answer, is Dr. James Levine, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic. In a study conducted in 1999, Levine monitored people who were eating identical, controlled diets, and he found out that people who staved off weight gain were the ones who were more active throughout the day. This might seem obvious, but the activity that Levine uncovered wasn’t exercise, or at least didn’t seem like it. It was nothing more than tiny, seemingly insignificant, often unconscious movements. When these were all added up, the more restless or antsy people burned up to eight-hundred more calories, leading to better bodies.

Judging by this research, it isn’t that I’m lucky because I don’t gain weight when I’m sitting. Rather, I’m lucky because when I’m sitting, I’m usually not really sitting. I’m prone to moving around, changing position, standing up and stepping into the other room when I need to think about what to do next. Until I read about Levine’s research, I was unaware of all this, but now I realize that by holding onto those habits I am burning calories and preventing the complete muscle relaxation that makes prolonged sitting so damaging to one’s health and physique.

As it turns out, sitting is so bad for us that even vigorous exercise might not compensate for the harm it does. But if you can prevent yourself from sinking into your office chair or home recliner for hours on end, and then add some additional activity to your day, you may find that your tendency to gain weight isn’t just a cruel trick of nature.

 Tips to Get Moving

If you feel locked into a sedentary lifestyle because of an office job or similar circumstances, remember that you aren’t tethered to your seat. You don’t need to stop working in order to start moving. Toss out old, parental advice that you not fidget. And for that matter, spin around in your office chair like a child. Swing your legs under the desk, and generally do whatever you can to inject some motion into an otherwise sedentary life. It doesn’t feel like exercise. Most of the time it just feels like idle play. But over the course of days and weeks, you’ll be burning a lot of excess calories.

But for the sake of better bodies, everybody needs more substantial exercise, as well. Still, once you’ve made regular movement part of your daily habits, you can apply the same lesson on a larger scale. If you like spinning around in a chair, spin around on a dance floor. You can even wear workout clothes from gymstar.ca in your pursuit for better bodies, if that makes you feel more active. If you like injecting a bit of play time into your workday, enjoy even more active play at home with your children or your pets. None of these kinds of things feel like exercise for those who enjoy doing them, and yet they add to one’s overall quality of life and they help to create better bodies.
