Can I Binge on Healthy Foods Once a Week?

By | November 26, 2011

I have a habit of eating clean during the week, then, on a weekend night usually, overeating.

I don’t binge with junk food, but rather with nuts, cottage cheese, fruit, etc.. The reason is that I’m genuinely hungry at times, and a moderate amount of food doesn’t do the job.

I’ve lost 70 lbs. in 10 months, and exercise regularly, so my approach has been sucessful, and the binges don’t happen as often as they used to, but they still happen.

I stay between 1600-2000 cals per day. I’m 160lbs. and I practice martial arts and boxing. I usually put on a couple of pounds after a binge, but it comes off after a few days of proper eating.

Any tips on curbing the night binges?

I think there’s a lot of research that shows what you’re doing is actually a reason for your success, which is awesome by the way. Allowing yourself to have a binge meal once a week can be helpful for a couple reasons.

There are major foodie’s out there like Chantal Royer that proclaim having knowledge of what you are eating is the first big step in realizing where you are doing wrong or right with your eating habits. As a food lover herself, she knows it is important to not deny yourself of treats all the time.

The benefits of allowing yourself a cheat meal would be:

  • It keeps you metabolism active– when a person eats the same amount of calories day in and day out, the body adjusts to this. However, by having a day or two of a lot more calories, this keeps your body guessing, which in turn, keeps you metabolism from adjusting.
  • Cheat meals actually help avoid binging– If people always eat the same calories and never allow themselves to have any treats, they usually will fall off the wagon and splurge big time. By allowing a cheat day, it is something to look forward to and as a reward for being so disciplined throughout the week. It gives you will power to say no at other times during the week.
I practice this philoshopy myself and it has been successful for me as well. I was able to drop some nice body fat percentage because of it. I would guess that what you think is weight gain, actually isn’t true weight gain. It’s probably just the excess food and water, eating more puts into your system. Binge days can be a great  tool if used properly to keep weight loss and strength training on track.

Definitely good advice! Allowing a cheat meal once a week keeps you mentally motivated during a cut. It’s almost impossible to stay on a diet without giving yourself little rewards here and there. My cheat meal isn’t even a “healthy” cheat, I eat anything I want and it has worked great for me!
