Should Women Take the Same Workout Supplements as Men?

While both women and men both need the same basic nutrients to build muscle and strength, because of differences in hormone levels, it may be beneficial for women to choose workout supplements that have been developed specifically for them.

Because of naturally occurring high testosterone levels in men, they are able to much more easily add muscle mass and gain strength.

Women, on the other hand, lack high levels of this hormone and can have a harder time building muscle. Taking supplements that have been formulated with this in mind can help.

Workout Supplements for Women

Unfortunately, 95% of the workout supplements available in today’s market are developed with men in mind or offer no distinction between men or women. However, there are a few brands that have realized the need for gender-specific supplements and are now selling them.

One brand I’ve found is Gen-P which is a line of workout supplements developed for women.

What Makes It Unique?

One of the major differences is Gen-P’s use of soy protein isolate. Soy protein is a great vegetarian based protein option and woman can make much better use of soy than men can because of the natural plant estrogens it contains.

Whey protein tends to be a dirty product to produce because it takes a lot of resources to, first, raise and milk cows and then isolate the whey from the milk. Soy, on the other hand, is more environmentally friendly and much more sustainable.

Also, research has shown that soy compliments whey protein well and soy is high in the amino acids arginine and glutamine.

Arginine stimulates the production of the anabolic hormones that are responsible for muscle formation. Glutamine is important during instances of metabolic stress.

So, since Gen-P combines the two, it is a great protein supplement for women to use and can give superior results rather than consuming just whey protein alone.
